Top Tips For Starting a Business In The Aesthetics Industry

Top Tips For Starting a Business In The Aesthetics Industry

We recently caught up with aesthetics expert Laura, founder of The Aesthetics Bar Herts, to get her advice on what it really takes to build a successful career in the aesthetics industry. With years of hands-on experience and a thriving business of her own, Laura shared her top tips for anyone looking to start their journey in this fast-growing and competitive field. Take a look at Laura’s expert insights that could help you turn your passion for aesthetics into a thriving business.

1. What inspired you, and how did you take the first steps?

I was inspired by role models in the aesthetics industry who were doing incredible work. Watching them succeed motivated me to take the leap myself. But I quickly realized that while they were succeeding, they weren’t doing it in a way that reflected my background, passion, and drive. I knew that I could bring something unique to the table, so I decided to take that first step and do it better — my way.

2. What was the biggest challenge when setting up your business?

The biggest challenge was navigating the business side of things. Anyone can start a business, but really understanding how to manage finances, make smart decisions, and run operations smoothly took time. It’s crucial to invest in good support, so my advice is to find a great accountant early on. It’ll save you a lot of stress in the long run!

3. What’s the most important thing to focus on when starting an aesthetics business?

When starting out, it’s easy to focus on earnings, but that can be a trap. The reality is, you need to reinvest every penny into your business — whether that’s for further training or expanding your skills. The aesthetics industry is fast-paced and ever-evolving, and it takes time to truly master it. Don’t rush the process, and make sure you have a side income to support yourself while you grow.

4. Are there any common mistakes you’d advise new business owners in the industry to avoid?

A common mistake I see is focusing too much on quantity rather than quality. It’s tempting to take on every client, but if something feels off — even if it’s just a slight red flag — don’t treat them. Always prioritise quality and the well-being of your clients over everything else.

5. What resources, training, or support networks were most valuable to you in the early days?

In the early days, I found that building a support network was invaluable. I created a WhatsApp group for students and practitioners because even the most experienced professionals sometimes need advice when things don’t go as planned. I also reached out to others in the industry locally, building friendships and sharing knowledge. Don’t underestimate the power of community and collaboration.

6. How do you balance the creative/clinical side of aesthetics with the business side (marketing, finance, admin)?

It’s all about time management. I set aside one day a week specifically for admin and social media. This allows me to plan ahead and avoid feeling overwhelmed. Staying organised is key to balancing the clinical and business aspects of the industry.

7. What’s one strategy that’s helped you attract and retain clients?

Consistency is everything. I show up every day online and always remain true to myself. Clients can feel when you’re authentic and when you genuinely care about them. By ensuring they feel valued and cared for 24/7, you build lasting relationships that keep them coming back.

8. If you could give one piece of advice to someone just starting out in the aesthetics industry, what would it be?

My biggest piece of advice is to ensure you’re obtaining regulated qualifications. The industry is changing fast, and you don’t want to be left behind or facing financial strain due to outdated qualifications. Stay ahead of the curve to future-proof your career.

9. What mindset or habits have been most helpful to your success?

Success in this industry requires total dedication. You have to live and breathe it — 100%. When you’re fully committed, there’s no room for failure because you’re constantly striving to give your best. It’s about passion, persistence, and the mindset that you can’t settle for anything less than your absolute best.

10. Which top & trousers from Kara are your favourites for work?

I love the Kara Edit range and my favourites are the No.1 Amor Zip Top & No.7 Fortis Tailored Trousers!
